Grand Canyon Trip - June 8 - Hike Out

On Friday, June 8, we packed up and had a leisurely hour-long paddle from our camp site to the head of the Pipe Springs trail - just past Phantom Ranch. There we began a grueling 7.5 mile (1 mile vertical) hike out to the South Rim in 100o+ temperatures carrying 40-50lb packs.

We started up the Pipe Springs trail in the cool of the morning. Lunch was at 9:30 at Indian Gardens. Click on the group below for an enlargement.

...then things got rough. The temp went up over 100 and we were very exposed from Indian Gardens to the South Rim.

We got to the top anywhere from 12:30-5pm. We were exhausted and rested against the lodge. We looked and smelled like a bunch of homeless people. We fortified ourselves with ice cream and re-hydrated with lemonade.
