Wilderness First Responder
 In
early May, Jon took a course to get certified as a Wilderness First Responder (WFR).
The course was offered by the Wilderness
Medicine Institute, part of NOLS
(National Outdoor Leadership School).
The course was sponsored by Sea Trek
and taught at the Bay Model in Sausalito and at the Pt. Bonita YMCA in the Marin
Headlands.

The WFR course offered plenty of opportunity for some hands-on practice -
including splinting fractures using improvised materials.

We did a mock disaster scene on Richardson Bay with a lot of
simulated kayaker injuries

We got plenty of classroom time, too.

One night, in the Marin Headlands, we did a simulated night
rescue, complete with (simulated) fractured fibula/tibula, seizures, and impeding darkness
and cold (real).

Bay to Breakers
On May 16th, we both ran in the Bay to Breakers race in San
Francisco. This is an annual 7.5 mile race that starts downtown near the bay and
ends at the ocean. When we got to the starting line, we were delighted to run
into our friends Mike and Sheri and Sheri's mom, Maria. We ran with them part of the
race and joined them afterwards for the post-race celebrations.

One Bay to Breakers tradition is to dress in costume - see
the salmon swimming upstream. This year being chased by a sushi chef. Another
tradition is to dress in no costume!

The course winds through San Francisco and up Hayes Street
Hill.

Through Haight-Ashbury and Golden Gate Park...

The finish line was at Ocean Beach. Afterwards we met Mike,
Sheri, and friends at "Footstock" - a music and foodfest in Golden Gate Park.

After the race, we went to Cha Cha Cha in the Haight to
rehydrate with Mike, Sheri, Maria, Natalia, Bud, Penny, Margaret, and Nick. To avoid Hyponatremia, we had to eat some tapas there, too.

New York City
In late May, Jon went to New York for a conference. In a
couple of free moments he walked around Times Square and Rockefeller Center.
