About our Switzerland trip...
We went to the Berner-Oberland region of
Switzerland this fall on vacation in September 199. We spent a day in Zurich and a week
hiking in the Swiss alps. Click on each picture below to go to a page with more
pictures....
Zurich
We flew into Zurich and spent the
night at the Hotel Zum Storchen. Walked around the city - a very pretty and prosperous
place. Saw the ZurichSee (lake) and canals. Fortunately, the expensive shops were closed
so Care did not bankrupt us.
Grindelwald
After our weekend in Zurich, we took the train to
Grindelwald, a mountain town at the base of the alps. Grindelwald is very much a tourist
town - but the scenery is spectacular. We spent three days here hiking, resting, and
enjoying the scenery. We stayed in a hotel overlooking Eiger. We could watch the sun move
across the valley.
Alpine Hikes
From Grindelwald, we were able to take a cable car up (from
3000' to 7800' in elevation) and hike along the mountains above town. This hike featured
an alpine lake. We finished the hike at a mountain restaurant and bar where we caught the
bus back to town.
Jungfrau
We took a train
to Jungfrauhoch - the highest elevation train station in Europe and walked on the glacier
there. On the way down, we hiked along the face of Eiger...
Murren
After Grindelwald, we went to the towns
of Wengen and Murren. They were in the next valley over - much less tourist infested - but
even more spectacular scenery.
Schilthorn
From Murren, we took a cable car up to Piz Gloria -
a mountaintop restaurant on Schilthorn where On Her Majesty's Secret Service (a James Bond
movie) was filmed. On the hike down, Care ran into a wooly situation.
