August was also a slow month, still on lockdown, but there was some hiking and Virtual High Ground. We had our water feature rebuilt and spent the month both sheltering and sweltering in place. It was really hot and some freak thunderstorms ignited a bunch of fires. We were unaffected except for lots of smoke and bad air quality.
Open Space Hike Behind House
On August 7th, Jon did his annual hike in the open space behind our house. It has limited access so not too many people go up there. I check it out every year. It is easier now that we have a gate.
Virtual High Ground
Every July, we typically go to Buena Vista, CO for High Ground, an annual conclave of designers and design educators. This year, because of COVID-19, we moved High Ground to August, hoping we could all meet in person, but alas, like so many other things, we had to do it virtually via Zoom. We hope we can go in person next year - so it will be more like last year.
Firefighting Chopper at O69
Last August in Northern California featured a number of fires started by lighting strikes during a freak summer storm. We were surrounded by fires at Pt. Reyes, Healdsburg, and Napa/Solono counties. The air quality was bad. Jon found that he had some new neighbors at Petauma Airport. One of the taxiways had been appropriated as a staging area for giganitic firefighting helicopters.
Rebuilt Water Feature
The waterfall in our back yard stopped working and we had to have it totally rebuilt. Nate, the contractor we hired, specialized in water features and was a real craftsman. The new design should have less maintenance and a more aesthetic water sheeting. He put in metal weirs to help make the water sheet better.
UC Classmates
One of my classmates sent these pictures of us 40 years ago. None of us has changed a bit! Most of these are from 1980 and few from 1981.
