NYC Avon Walk
The weekend of October 14-16th, we spent in NYC for the
Avon Breast Cancer Walk. Sara, Rusty, Jane and Scott arrived earlier in
the week and Care joined them on Friday. They spent the day sightseeing
together. First, Sara, Rusty and Care became acquainted with the NY metro
system on their way to the 911 Memorial. We had mid-morning tickets to the
Memorial and spent a good part of our time going through 4-5 security checks.
Once we passed inspection we were allowed into the site. There is
considerable construction surrounding the park including a memorial museum.

Scott and Jane joined us mid-day and we headed out to the
Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Our tickets only included the grounds
of the Statute, not the inside, so we enjoyed walking around the island and
viewing the lady from all angles.

At Ellis Island, we toured the hall in which millions of
immigrants were first introduced to the United States from 1892-1954. In 1965,
Ellis Island became part of the Statue of Liberty National Memorial.

On Saturday, the 26 mile day for
the Avon walk began in the dark at
Hudson River Park Pier 84 after a light breakfast and a rousing opening ceremony. We ended the day at Randall's Island and were fortunate that we
had a hotel to return to rather than a tent since the night proved to be quite
windy.

and pink tents.

View of Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan Bridge.
We crossed both walking.
At the same time as the ladies were walking, Jon and Rusty checked out the
Occupy Wall Street protesters.
Next, Jon and Rusty visited the Hi-line which is a 1
mile linear park section of the former elevated freight railroad spur
called the West Line Spur which runs along the lower
west side of Manhattan. The line runs under the
Standard Hotel.
Saturday night we celebrated Jon's birthday at
Trattoria dell'Artes. We were all feeling a little worn from walking all
day but we had a fun dinner.
Day 2, Sunday, 13 miles to go from Randall's Island back
into the city at Pier 84. On the way, we
captured a couple of architectural shots.
We finally make it to the finish line.
Somewhere in the background below is Reese.
Dinner at Tao Restaurant was a celebration to our
finish and a fun weekend.
